Cyclone Ockhi Live Updates: Precautionary Holiday Declared For Schools, Colleges In Mumbai

Mumbai and Surat have been put on rain alert as Cyclone Ockhi is moving northwestwards. The cyclone has claimed 19 lives in Kerala and is now moving further up. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted light to heavy rains on the Maharashtra coast as well as South Gujarat, with the cyclone moving northwards with a speed of 16 km per hour.

The death toll in rain-related incidents due to Cyclone Ockhi rose to 19 in Kerala. Over 690 fishermen, stranded at sea off state’s coast, have been rescued in combined operations carried out by the Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force. Ninety six fishermen are still missing.While 74 houses were fully damaged and 1122 houses were partially damaged.

A fresh spell of rainfall is expected to lash Tamil Nadu as the well-marked low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea is likely to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours and a deep depression in the subsequent 48 hours, the Met office said.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Kanyakumari on Sunday and reviewed the search and rescue operation in Tamil Nadu and Kerala along with senior officials.

 On her arrival in the worst-hit Kanyakumari district by helicopter from Thiruvanathapuram in Kerala, Sitharaman held discussions with deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, ministers and officials.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan along with Union minister Alphons Kannamthanam held a high-level meeting in Thiruvanathapuram to assess the post Ockhi situation and relief and rescue operations.

The Navy is continuing with its rescue operations over southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands in aftermath of the cyclone. Ten naval ships including capital ships like Chennai and Kolkata are being deployed over southeast Arabian sea and Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands

Commander Sridhar Warrier PRO (Defence), Kochi, said Indian Naval ships Chennai, Trikand and Kolkata are stationed around the islands with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials. The ships are equipped with desalination plants amd will be able to provide the islands fresh water as and when required. The total relief material would sustain approximately 5000 persons for a period of seven days.

The Indian Met Department has said that moderate to heavy rains in some areas along with squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph are likely over Mumbai, Surat and other areas of Maharashtra coast and South Gujarat on Monday as well as Tuesday.

“The very severe cyclonic storm ‘OCKHI’ over east central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea moved further north-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of 03 rd December, 2017 over eastcentral Arabian Sea near Latitude 13.5º N and Longitude 68.5º E, about 530 km west-northwest of Amini Divi, 770 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 970 km south-southwest of Surat. It is very likely to move nearly northwards during next 6 hours and then recurve north-northeastwards towards south Gujarat and adjoining north Maharashtra coasts,” IMD said in a statement.

The IMD also said that that sea condition would be rough to very rough along and off north Maharashtra and South Gujarat coasts from December 4 to 6. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off South Gujarat and North Maharashtra during this period.

    Include a charged cell phone, torch, radio, batteries, matches, candles, food, water, can opener, knife, and first aid supplies.

    Walk only where floodwaters aren’t moving.

    Use a stick to check the depth of the water and firmness of the ground in front of you.

    If there’s a chance of flash flooding, move immediately to higher ground.

    Flash floods are a leading cause of weather-related deaths.
